Watch Our Dog Enjoy a Ski Tour in Powder through the trees
We've ski toured with dogs for many years, our hardy Jack Russells becoming legends in their ski touring lifetimes, with tiny legs so barely able to see over our powder tracks but hearts of lions.
Their hardcore ski touring days are now over. We lost Kiki at the ripe (ripping) age of 16 last year and her daughter, Beanie, now 13 years old, only comes on easy jaunts. But we have Ullr, our 4 year old Huskie/Collie cross. After an early skiing accident that saw his back leg slashed and replaced with carbon tendons via a major Supervet-style operation in Gap, he is now fully recovered and turning into a true ski tour-loving powder hound.
His leg is miraculously stronger than ever. He has no trouble climbing up, often enjoying lying in the deepest snow while waiting for us - or torpedoing through it, nose first.
Although sometimes he follows a scent off through the trees, he always returns, usually just as we are getting the phone out to find him on his tracker app. We use a whistle, but his best recall is the word 'biscuit', which will bring him back in seconds. Unless he's really distracted. That's when a shout with a swear word or two from Gav, will get his attention.
Coming down he's pretty fast, keeping up with Gav and, also, his distance from the skis. The most useful command is 'this way' so that he knows not to go off in a different direction, but he's also constantly checking out where Gav is going.
